Indies Supporting Indies Ft Marisa Blake

Indies Supporting Indies Featuring

Marisa Blake

Bilingual TV/Film/Voiceover Actress, Musician, Mom, and More

I first met Marisa freshmen year at Warren Wilson College, which has been… a while

One of my oldest friends, Marisa is featured on the cover of my upcoming debut novel The Anchor of Time. She’s a regular Renaissance woman who has always been an inspiration to me. There are definitely threads of Marisa woven into Renata Stone–one of the main, and most mysterious characters in my book–along with other women whom I admire.

Literally years ago now, Marisa posed for these portraits, as Renata – at Studio Misha Photography. If you are in Western North Carolina, I highly recommend Misha for all your portrait needs. (I certainly don’t take a photo without her!)

Marisa is one of those magical creatives that is the whole package. Her talents are not limited to acting and voiceover work, she is also a gifted singer, musician, as well as Flamenco dancer and  basketball player! She’s a dedicated “mom of dudes” and wife too.

In short, she’s got it going on and her independent, creative spirit definitely inspires me every day to follow my passion and my art, wherever it leads.

Be sure to check out Marisa’s website, as well as follow her on Instagram.

Audible for TAOT will hopefully be available in 2021, and it is my dream that Marisa will also be the narrator! That would be full circle for me. In the meantime, check out Marisa’s many TV/Film and Audible credits here.

The Gnomes Got It Going On!

The Gnomes Have Got It Going On

Greetings Garden Party Vampires,

It’s finally here! The Garden Gnomes and Garlic Cloves Paranormal Romance Vampire Book Club reading list for the rest of 2020!

I know you’ve been waiting to sink your teeth into a good book that has nothing to do with what’s going on in the news…

I have taken that idea to heart and made a list of engrossing, vampire-loving, binge-worthy books (that are all part of a series, so have at yee if you want to go down your own #vampirebookclub hole…)

Bodice ripping, paranormal romance loving, brain candy–and a cocktail? Don’t mind if I do! Don’t drink? We will always include the mocktail version for those reading sessions where you really do want to remember every word… and yes, this is a ‘Sunday brunch cocktail’, so that means that there is a baked treat inspired by every month’s books because reading requires breakfast. Maybe even a second breakfast.

Without further ado, here is the reading schedule!

October 25th

A note about #GGGC book club meetings: The first book listed each month (GGGC Book Club meeting) will be discussed IN DEPTH, and have SPOILERS because we’re hoping you will all have read it!

The #gardenpartyreview books will be given a spoiler-free review and is really just an excuse to have another cocktail and talk about how vampires don’t suck like 2020 does. Feel free to read one, or both! You do you. Tune in to GGGC Book Club meetings on Discord–and if you miss it, no problem, we’ll record the live stream and post it to my YouTube channel which is coming soon.

Lupus Obsidian Publishing

Lupus Obsidian Publishing, Est. 2020

I finally decided on a name for my publishing imprint, Behold, Lupus Obsidian Publishing! There are a lot of different options for indies when it comes to their imprint, and this decision invariably also brings up if they want to own an ISBN or use a free one from Amazon or Ingram Spark.

What is an ISBN exactly?

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number… The International Standard Book Number is a numeric commercial book identifier. Each ISBN is unique! Publishers—which I am a self-publisher so read as me— purchase ISBNs from an affiliate of the International ISBN Agency. An ISBN is assigned to each separate edition and variation of a publication. So my e-book and paper back will each have their own ISBN. Published books the world over all have ISBN’s! Pretty neat!

So… what is an imprint then?

The publisher’s imprint is basically a trade name under which the publisher works. I am self-published so technically Tina Capricorn Inc is my publisher. But the imprint or trade name I am using is Lupus Obsidian Publishing.

Fun fact: A single publishing company may have multiple imprints, often using the different names as brands to market works to various demographic consumer segments.

Lupus Obsidian was chosen as a reference to the ship in my debut novel The Anchor of Time and to commemorate it as the vehicle I am taking to the next phase of my career—self published indie author!

Ultimately I decided that I wanted my own imprint and ISBN to have complete brand and content control over the books I am publishing. Even though I am self publishing, I am not going to be exclusive with Amazon. TAOT will have a wider distribution than just a Amazon. My book will be available on Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and hopefully a few local booksellers too!

Super nerdy fact: if I had used an ISBN from Ingram Spark, the imprint would belabeled Indy Pub. On Amazon indie books receive a 10 digit ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) instead of an ISBN if they are exclusive to Amazon. Each ASIN is unique to the eBook, and is an identification number for the Kindle Books on Amazon.

How I got here…

It is a little surreal to be here, as all you writers know this is a time you dream about—as you type away, alone at your key board. I knew that it would eventually happen, if I just kept at it…

The #writingcommunity on Twitter and Instagram has been fun—getting to know other writers online and that even though we work alone there is a vast network of awesome people, just as nerdy and into their work as me!

I’ve also taken a class here and there on writing, as well as participated in writing challenges like the #stevenkingwritingchallenge which was introduced to me by my #writingfriend Lio, as well as Nanowrimo and Camp Nanowrimo. Though I’ve never successfully completed a novel through the challenge, I have gotten a better writing practice because of my participation. Consistent dedication and practice is what helps get you from the first page to the final page of your manuscript…

Yup, you heard right. Writing takes practice, and writing a book takes an entire book to practice. I think I have been in school since I put my first line down back in 2014. I have an excerpt from that first paragraph from that early draft:

“Daylight vanished on ghost feet.

The city stood, a twilight kingdom, as the day retreated. Stretching and
pausing in windowsills and thresholds, the light briefly lingered. It was
the golden hour.”

Not gonna lie, that paragraph still gets me back to right were I was when I wrote that first line in 2014. I wrote 30 pages the first time I sat down to write TAOT and loved every minute of it. Something within me is a storyteller, always has been. Even with my artwork, there is always a back story to the image—nothing exists alone. I always included context, and back story. Raconteuse over here!

My first word was ‘book’

So much about publishing feels like destiny fulfillment and walking down a path I have been yearning to walk on to for so long.

I think taking six years to complete your first novel lends a lot of perspective! It has been a long wait, but that time was well spent. I helped raised my step-sons, and finished my first draft living under one roof with them for the first time. I remember distinctly writing my final sentence on the manuscript the summer Michael Phelps won his umpteenth gold medal in Rio. I remember watching him swim down his lane, as my fingers flew across my keys. I worked at the salon in those days, and wrote in every spare moment I got when I was not behind the chair.

I took a year off in 2018 to get married and buy a house. I submitted, agentless, to a publishing house before we moved–figuring I didn’t have time to work on it anyway to they might as well have a crack at it while I did important life things… They rejected it, but gave some great notes and to be honest, it was not ready then. After my life settled down I picked it back up and read it cover to cover. That version was awful! How embarrassing, I had even submitted that to a publisher! I rewrote 2/3 of it in 2019 and got it professionally edited (twice) and was planning on publishing in May of 2020, but then Covid…

My life from before the pandemic is very different to the life I have now. I have more time for writing, but I have had to make difficult desicions and reoriented my priorities. I think the pandemic did that for a lot of folks. Now, I am a full time writer, and have another part-time #retiredstylist gig. It is pretty surreal to think of how different my life is from last March–and even though I have worked so hard to get here, I know I am lucky, and privelaged to be where I am.

And if anything the wait has made the manuscript even stronger and will hopefully make the payoff of seeing my story in print at long last all that sweeter.
This version takes my breath away, the grand scale of it, the romance, the time travel…

Shout and thanks my wonderful husband, my best friend, partner, web designer, and number one fan Adam. Thank you for everything xoxo
